  • April 1992--
    The City purchases the First Western Bank property downtown for future development use.
  • June 23, 1992--
    Architect Jon Jerde presents a plan for the Fremont Street Experience. The City contracts Jerde to formulate an implementation plan.
  • May 20, 1993--
    The state approves an initiative to increase the room tax at specific downtown hotels as a funding mechanism for the Fremont Street Experience (AB433).
  • May 25, 1993--
    Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approves giving $8 million for the construction, improvement and betterment of a city-owned recreation facility--the Fremont Street Experience.
  • July 1, 1993--
    The state passes a bill enabling the creation of a pedestrian mall on Fremont Street (AB411).
  • August 4, 1993--
    The City Council approves an ordinance increasing by one and two percent the room tax at specific hotels located downtown to help finance the project (Ordinance 3722).
  • September 30, 1993--
    The eight owners of 10 downtown hotel/casinos unite to form the Fremont Street Experience Company.
  • October 20, 1993--
    The City Council passes an ordinance to close Fremont Street to through traffic and create a pedestrian mall (Ordinance 3747).
  • October 27, 1993--
    The Fremont Street Experience Project Development agreement is signed between the City of Las Vegas, the City of Las Vegas Downtown Redevelopment Agency and the Fremont Street Experience Company.

    Management agreement for the Fremont Street Experience is signed between the City of Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience Company.

  • November 1993--
    The City of Las Vegas begins acquiring the remaining property in the 400 block of Fremont Street, the future site of the Parking Plaza and the Plaza Shops at Fremont Street.
  • November 1, 1993--
    Architect agreement is signed between the Fremont Street Experience Company and JPI Nevada.
  • November 3, 1993--
    Construction management agreement is signed between the Fremont Street Experience Company and Marnell Corrao Associates.
  • November 3, 1993--
    Project management agreement is signed by the Fremont Street Experience Company and Atlandia Design.
  • March 1994--
    Asbestos removal and demolition of the First Western Bank and buildings in the 400 block of Fremont Street begin.
  • September 7, 1994--
    Fremont Street closes permanently to vehicular traffic to make way for construction of the Fremont Street Experience.
  • September 8, 1994--
    The City of Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience Company commemorate the evolution of Fremont Street and celebrate the beginning of the Fremont Street Experience with a celebratory history cruise.
  • September 16, 1994--
    Ground breaking for the Fremont Street Experience.
  • October-December 1994--
    Construction fences go up. The pavement on the street is removed. Thirty- foot-deep footings for the 16 support columns for the space frame are drilled and columns are installed.
  • January 1995--
    Approval and passage of solicitation ordinances, including a complete prohibition of panhandling within the Fremont Street Experience once the project becomes substantially complete.
  • February 1995--
    The space frame is delivered and installation begins on the construction site of the Fremont Street Experience. On Feb. 15, the first section of the space frame is lifted into place and attached to the columns. Forms and ramps go up on garage site.
  • July 1995 --
    Construction crews "top off" the space frame by installing the final section.
  • September 1995 ---
    The first landscaped block of the pedestrian mall, featuring palm trees, flowers and decorative paving, is unveiled between Main and First streets.
  • November 1995--
    Construction is completed on the 1,400-space parking garage.
  • December 14, 1995--
    Public grand opening of the Fremont Street Experience.
